keep_drifting_fun_or_else_sm

A new sticker design I just finished up. Over the years this has become my mantra. Keeping drifting fun is something that is INCREDIBLY important to me. I felt stickers would be an appropriate way to spread the gospel. These black/white/red on clear stickers should be back just in time for the holidays… and will be available on slidestyle.us.

This Deathmachines.net interview offers a really cool insight to how my buddy Will Roegge got into shooting and editing some of the most visually stunning automotive content EVER. This video also has a sneak peek at the 2010 Medium Monster reel… to which I spied some footage from the DMGGMASD events!

I had the pleasure of working with Ebisu Circuit on this collab tee for MotorMavens. These shirts really turned out great. They are available NOW in the MotorMavens Online Store! Don’t sleep on these – they are going FAST.

MotorMavens in November Super Street 2009 - All Star Bash Coverage with Risky Devil

I was pretty stoked to pick up the November issue of Super Street to find the MotorMavens logo on the All Star Bash coverage that Antonio shot! One of these days I will make it out to California for one of these events. One of these days.

Andy Sapp on the bank at Gresham Motorsports Park

I walked away from Southeast Drift’s Land of the Great at Gresham Motorsports Park unscathed and uneasy.

Newly poured asphalt adorns the raceway, as Gresham itself is a freshly renovated facility. I don’t know if they have some sort of compound additive in the pavement, but the track has an immense amount of grip… making is VERY difficult for a 180hp tank to break loose. I was attempting to initiate faster than I have ever initiated… only to have the car set and hug the bank like I was going for a better lap time. The few occasions I could snap the car loose on the bank, it sucked the power dry from my rear wheels, pulling me right down toward the inner-wall. Fast.

I (somehow) managed to qualify seventh, and was paired up with my buddy Dennis Mertzanis for the tandem comp. I didn’t feel comfortable running solo – let alone tandem, so I told Dennis to steer clear of me… that I was basically going to forfeit the run to him. Dennis went on to take home 2nd place.A fairly big-name in Atlanta’s drift scene approached me at the end of the day, and told me ‘this is the next level for drifting here’, and ‘that drivers are going to have to step it up if they want to participate’. This bothered me for several reasons… the biggest being FOR WHAT? This is grassroots drifting… it is supposed to be about having fun. What fun is wadding your car up into a wall, and having to sit the next season out because you ‘stepped it up’? For the majority of us who actually have an emotional stake in our cars – totaling it out trying to be a g-roots hero would be devastating. DEVASTATING.

I probably will not be back to drive at Gresham. The risk just isn’t worth it to me… especially when I (and the rest of Atlanta, really) have nothing to prove. Drifting already has its superstars. I just want to have fun with my friends.

The final Southeast Drift event of the year goes down this weekend at Gresham Motorsports Park. The practice event “Land of the Great” runs all day, and then once the sun sets… a comp ramps up under the lights. This will be my first time out to Gresham, and I love drifting at night, so I’m definitely stoked! Shouts to BH Design for the flyer work!

A Soiree in the Hamptons. from Andy Sapp on Vimeo.

This video is collaboration between myself, and Will Roegge. Will shot all of the footage last November at a secret invite-only event in Nashville. His amazing edit STILL ranks as the most viewed drifting video on Vimeo. I wanted to try and focus on a different aspect of drifting with this video. I wanted to peer into what really makes events like this so special: the people. The DriftMechaniks crew has an amazingly strong bond. It may sound cliché – but we are a family. Truth be told… it doesn’t really matter what we’re doing – we have the best of times when we are all together. That is what I wanted to explore with this video: the family and friendship we share at these events. If you take that camaraderie away… then well… it’s just… drifting.BIG thanks to Mr. Roegge for flexing his creative genius behind the lens, and allowing me the privilege to work with the footage!Hopefully you enjoy this look at what I feel is a more intimate side of this crazy sportIf not… please return to taking drifting way too serious and continue not having any fun. EVER.

Some still frames I’ve been wrenching on from a collab project with Will Roegge. Will shot a TON of footage at a super-secret private event last year. It has taken me forever to get around to this footage… but I am super-stoked to be working on it. I’m trying to explore some new avenues with this video, and I’m pretty exited about the progress!

Charlie turned me onto a killer bit of software that I’ve been tinkering with. Here are some screen caps using a clip that Will shot last November. If I can get this to do what I waaaant it to do… it will open a new door to create some killer work.

I'm a total nerd, yes.

Speedhunters Feature - Andy Sapp's E46 BMW 325Ci

Rod asked me if I would like to write a ‘Guest Blog’ on Speedhunters, which is now live on the site! Carlos “Panda” Richard and Cody “Coco” Wellons helped me immensely with the photography for the feature. We shot the car inside the walls of Oakland Cemetary, which is as visually stunning as it is historically significant.Big thanks to Carlos and Cody for the snaps, and to Rod for the opportunity!

The shirt I designed for our demo at the Motorsport Nationals. When it wasn’t pouring insane amounts of rain, we sold a lot of these tees. If only we had the insight to make raincoats. :P

If you’re interested in picking one up, they’re available over at Slide Style™.

DriftMechaniks - Motorsport Nationals 2009

BH Design coming through with an amazing chop of what pretty much sums up DriftMechaniks in one image: something that makes zero sense, that you will never understand… much less be a part of.

I had the opportunity to design all of the ‘Hero Cards’ for the Motorsport Nationals autograph sessions. I put a lot of time into these cards, and wanted them all to be slightly different… while maintaining a cohesive feel that I developed for the flyer. Like the flyer, I wanted the design to feel vibrant with energy to help reflect the chaotic nature of the sport.
